We are Americans who have lived in the Philippines for almost 50 years. We raised our four American children here and currently have 13 grandchildren. During our time here, we have struggled with the differences between Filipino and American versions of English. In fact, we had such a difficult time with those differences that we took our kids out of local schools and homeschooled them, just so that we could have them speak American English. ... How Is American English Different from Filipino English?

While Filipinos are wonderful and gracious people, and Filipino English is okay for communicating in English inside the Philippines, Filipino English is in fact a second-language form of English and very different from standard English. This is because English is in fact a “second-language” for Filipinos. They are born into families whose main language is one of over 80 native dialects of the Filipino language. ... However, most families in the country do learn at least some English but only as a second-language. Filipinos study English in school from an early age because the Philippine government has made English the “common language” in the country for education and for business. Their schools might use English textbooks that come from the US or UK, but it is a fact that Filipino English is heavily influenced by the pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary of the different Philippine languages. Learning a second-language form of English will not get you the high-level result you seek. (Remember that we had to pull our kids out of Philippine schools and teach them ourselves!)
